On the Move

We did it. We're in. Phew.

It was our most organized move yet, with all of our belonging transferred to our house by early afternoon Saturday. We had the right guys helping-- loading, moving, and reconstructing bedroom furniture. By mid afternoon, as the kids and I were outfitting the beds with fresh linens, this tired lady ran out of steam.

It may have been a smooth move, but the house was not quite ready-- at least not as ready as we had hoped. It's been a little tricky, if not chaotic. The painters are not quite done, the floors are neither finished nor clean, bathroom cabinets and drawers are disassembled, most closets are without rods, and kitchen shelving has yet to be constructed. Last night I came around the house to see water gushing every which way and down the lane... a water pipe at the washer hook up busted.

Fun times. Jon and I sit down at night and comment to each other that we love our quirky house near the sea. We turn on the lights and water features in the pool for ambience, and ignore the chaos. Maybe I should say our tired minds and bodies can no longer focus, so we sit and gaze. And we are thankful.

But it would seem that renovations, flus, a trip to China for Jon, and a move are not enough activity for this family. Yep, we're on the move again. I woke up this morning with the nearly impossible task of finding (or washing) enough clothing to pack up the family and head across the country.

Ha! A few times today I considered taking the easy way out and having a nervous breakdown, but I sensed there was no time. I'd like to think this is terrible timing-- actually, I have thought that more than once today-- but I know that this is God's good timing. And sense of humor maybe.

This afternoon we left town and headed toward LAX in the truck. On the freeway Jon's window was down and the kids were smiling. He and some of our kids were singing along to Matt Kearney, which was playing loudly at my request. I looked over at Jon and felt a little jealous at his ability to quickly and completely unwind. My arms were crossed and fists nearly clenched as I thought of all the details left up in the air... the disaster of our house, the two packages being delivered to the wrong address, house locks that have not been changed, mail issues, bags that are surely missing all the essentials, blah, blah, blah. I was so tightly wound I was nearly choking. We past a guy on a motor bike, and I thought he looked too big for his bike. Then I thought it would probably fit me nicely. If I were on that bike, I thought, I would be riding it so fast. With regards to that nervous breakdown, I'm not sure if that would fall under fight or flight.

Here I am using my computer for the first time in a few days, sitting in a hotel room and ready to catch a flight in the morning. Hours have now past since we left, and I am beginning to unwind. Yes, I am beginning to think that this trip's timing will be just right after all. For lots of reasons.

So, on a wing and a prayer, another adventure awaits!
