Happy for Friday...

"The Lord will fulfill His purposes for me;
your steadfast love, O Lord, endures forever.
Do not forsake the work of your hands."
Ps. 138: 8

I read the following several weeks ago in our school curriculum, Tapestry of Grace (Year 1, wk. 9),  but the original source is unknown. It resonated with me so I copied it out here:

Malachi 3:3 "He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver."

This verse puzzled some women in a Bible study, and they wondered what this statement meant about the character and nature of God. One of the women offered to find out the process of refining silver and get back to the group at their Bible study.

That week the woman called a silversmith and made an appointment to watch him at work. She didn't mention anything about the reason for her interest beyond her curiosity about the process of refining silver.

A she watched the silversmith, he held a piece of silver over the fire and let it heat up. He explained that in refining silver, one needed to hold the silver in the middle of the fire where the flames were hottest to burn away all the impurities.

The woman thought about God holding us in such a hot spot; then she thought again about the verse, "He sits as a refiner and purifier of silver." She asked the silversmith if it was true that he had to sit there in front of the fire the whole time the silver was being refined. The man said yes, not only did he have to sit there holding the silver, but he had to keep his eyes on the silver the entire time it was in the fire. If the silver was left a moment too long in the flames, it would be destroyed.

The woman was silent for a moment. Then she asked the silversmith, "How do you know when the silver is fully refined?" He smiled at her and answered, "Oh, that's easy-- when I see my image in it."

The kids and I went for another bike ride yesterday, and this time we brought along some nuts...

Jack finally lost that front tooth yesterday. He had become afraid of losing teeth-- I think because his oldest brother always volunteered to yank the other ones out for him. In the end, Michael helped him with this one too, but if was soooo ready.

He was more interested in cracking his nut than in posing for me...

Andrew's chain fell off, and Michael gave it his best to fix it up again. Unfortunately it was a no-go...

I'm off in just a few moments to get my hair fixed. It has been months and I'm so ready. I'm ready for the weekend, too, and for our last football games tomorrow.

Happy weekend!

  1. Katherine, I cannot describe how glad I am to be able to read your blog.. My daughters only recently informed me that it exists. It is a blessing to see what has continued of what I observed when you lived nearby and our girls were able to get to know you. Just brief visits when I would come to pick up one of them from a babysitting job allowed me to comprehend that you and Jon are an amazing, faithful couple trusting and obeying our faithful God as you raise your family to His glory. Your influence in the lives of our girls has been evident and I thank God for it.
