Twenty

"Happy anniversary," Jon said when he brought me coffee this morning and we sat on the side of the bed marveling. "Congratulations to you for staying married to me!"

Really I'm just thankful he has stayed married to me.

He bought us an anniversary gift. It's an "adventure" gift, really. We're going skydiving sometime soon.

How fitting! Marriage has been an adventure-gift. Kinda like skydiving at times.

Increasingly, our culture asks why anyone would choose marriage, just like many ask why anyone would voluntarily jump out of a plane. There are risks, potential complications... scary, gut-wrenching moments of "What have I done? This was a terrible idea!"

But the joy of it, the adventure, the experience, and the stories of surviving and conquering challenges... these add richness to life. To share the adventure-gift of marriage with my nearest and dearest friend is truly a great blessing from God. In the end, it is not our doing that ensures a fun ride and a soft landing, but God who keeps us soaring. And the free falling parts? Those are necessary in marriage to remind us of who will keep us. Without the episodes of free falling, we don't appreciate the parachute, the sustaining power of God. Our hope and our confidence is in him.

So after 7, 305 days of marriage, I can say with certainty that it has been a wonderful adventure. We've had our free falling moments, maybe jumps we wished we hadn't taken. We've occasionally jumped into the unknown and we've enjoyed the thrill of many experiences we still look back on and think, "Wow! I can't believe we did that!" We've had our times of bliss and times of sorrow, shared in a bond that is a grace of life gifted by God.

We say time flies! Also fitting. I'm looking forward to many more years of exuberant adventures with my love!

We recently took an anniversary trip. I hope to post pictures soon, but I've been too busy enjoying life and relationships!

  1. I agree with all that you said, though we were not the adventurous type, we had no idea what we were taking on when we set out together. How I thank God for all that He brought us through and taught us in the process.
Thank you so much, Katherine, for sharing with us. I begin tocannot tell you how much I appreciate it!

    1. You are right: He brings us through a great deal and we learn in the process. I'm thankful for that!

  2. Amen sister! I love you both. Congratulations for surviving the jump. 😂 I pray you both survive the sky diving. Maybe if I had 40 years of sky diving under my belt, like I have marriage by God’s grace, I’d be willing to jump. ðŸĪŠ You impassioned my thinking as always and your analogy today about my marriage was timely as we are still on the road in the RV and our house won’t be done until March. We’ve had a few days that make sky diving sound less adventurous than marriage and I’m afraid of heights. 😂😂😂

    1. Yeah, I hear you! Marriage can make sky diving seem like a better choice sometimes; marital failure is more common than parachute failure! But press on... I believe the best things in life are almost always the hardest.

I'm so happy to know you have a house in progress. The RV won't be for always, so HOORAY for that!
